CANN 81 and CANN alias PLOWMAN
Although Canne and Plowman have long existed as separate surnames in the area of Norfolk south of Wymondham, it is tempting to conclude that the very early existence of the surnames Canne alias Plowman and Plowman alias Canne meant that the separate surnames were derived from that alias. For instance, in Banham Geoffrey Canne left the residue of his estate in 1473 to William Plowman and in the small parish of New Buckenham Thomas Plowman alias Canne was baptised 2 December 1546 although later entries to about 1600 were exclusively Canne. However Robert Plowman began have children baptised there from 1600 with his wife Winnifred (they died there in 1642 and 1644). In the adjacent parish of Old Buckenham, whose early parish register is much destroyed, the earliest entries from the 1580s were mostly for Canne while in Banham, adjoining both Buckenhams, the early entries were roughly equal for Plowman, Canne and Plowman alias Canne. In Attleborough Plowman appeared from the start of the registers there in 1552 until 1596 and there were no Cannes there in that period.
In Bunwell, Cannes (without Plowman) were resident from the beginning of the parish registers in 1551 when John Canne was buried, followed by the burial of Rose Canne in 1556 and William Canne married Marrones Moore there 3 Feb. 1560/1. Earlier, Thomas Canne of Bonnewell (Bunwell) left a will 82 made in 1476 which referred to his wife Margaret and children Robert, William, Leticia and Joan and identified Robert Canne’s residence as Besthorpe and referred to his house called Boswell.
John Canne married ______ in about 1522 and had at least the following children, likely born in Bunwell:
1. William born about 1523
2. Thomas born about 1526 (see below);

5. Margaret born about 1534;
6. Edmund born about 1537;
7. Robert born about 1540;
John Canne of Bunwell died and was buried there 9 October 1551 with a will 83 which provided for his seven children, the last five being under the aged of 24, and referred to his brother Thomas and to John Hurning.

Both Steven Jr. and his mother Isabell are recorded in the Bunwell, Carleton Manor Court Rolls of 18 Nov. 1639 as the successors to the lands of Steven Cann Senior, deceased.

Robert may have been the Robert Canne buried in Bunwell 8 Aug. 1589.
Ralph Plowman had a son Roger baptised in Bunwell 13 Dec. 1584.
Thomas Plowman of Eccles (s.w of Old Buckenham and north of E. The witnesses to his will were from Bunwell and New Buckenham.

William Plowman alias Canne of Old Buckenham left a will in 1550 89 which provided for his wife Johan and his sister Agnes the wife of Thomas Garrarde and referred to his lands which were once Robert Durrant’s. 2. Rachel Cane buried 3 August 1584;
2. Jonas Can baptised ___ Aug. 1594 but buried there 20 Dec. 1594.
Thomas Cann and William Cann, who follow, were also very likely his sons.
Thomas was buried in Old Buckenham 26 April 1597 91 and as Thomas Plowman alias Cann of Old Buckenham, a bricklayer, left a will 92 in 1597 which provided for his wife Rebecca, son Joseph and daughter Mary 93 and gave his free lands in Banham to his son William, his copy-hold lands in Banham to his son Daniel and his lands in Old Buckenham to his son Thomas. The witnesses to his will included Barnaby Cann, Edward Cann and Robert Cann.
Thomas Cann the elder of Old Buckenham (b.c. 1578 likely the son of Thomas above) was buried in Old Buckenham 6 September 1638 and left a will 94 which gave his lands in Old Buckenham (Stackford Furlong) to his sons Daniel and Francis Cann and provided for his son Thomas who was to be executor.
William Canne (b.c. 1580 likely the son of Thomas above) married Anne/Agnes Townsend 18 October 1603 in Old Buckenham and had at least his first seven children baptised there 95 although, except for the baptism of Thomas in 1617, the mother’s name was not given:

7. Thomas baptised in Old Buckenham 25 May 1617 and likely had at least 2 sons - Thomas and Daniel- baptised there in 1637 and 1647 and who by 1666 was living in Crownthorpe; and
8. Benjamin baptised in Wymondham 2 Feb. 1621/2 and who by 1666 was living in Great Yarmouth 99.
William was the only Cann having children baptised in Old Buckenham in this period.
The 1624 ANF will of James Townsend of Old Buckenham provided for his daughter Agnes Canne and gave bequests to James, Mary, Juda, Anne, William and Thomas Canne, the children of Agnes. However, a James Cann of Carleton Forehoe (just north of Crownthorpe) took out a bond 16 July 1681 to administer the estate of his mother Joanna Cann widow of same. This may have been a transcription error of Joanna for Anna or there was another James Cann.
James Cann of Crownthorpe married Martha ______ in about 1624 and had at least the following children:
1. Francis (male) born about 1625 and who by 1665 was living in Deopham;

James was still living in Crownthorpe 102 in November of 1665 when Thomas Reinolds, his son-in-law, made his will 103. However, he died between then and 1671/2 when his widow Martha wrote her will. Martha Cann, widow, was buried in Wicklewood 19 March 1671/2 and her will 104 gave her land to her grand-child James Cann (likely the son of Francis) and to her son-in-law Thomas Thillthorpe (Themilthorpe) and also provided for her grand-daughter Martha Cann (who likely was the daughter of Francis) but did not refer to any other of her children or grandchildren by name.
While it is tempting to claim that this Martha Cann, daughter of James, married Thomas Reynolds in about 1654, her marriage to Themilthorpe who did not die until 1684/5 105 effectively rules this out.
Mary Cann, single woman of Wicklewood, was to marry Stephen Youngman of Wicklewood there or St. Gregory by license dated 9 May 1684.
John Cann married Susan Punder in 1623 in Carleton Rode (Boyds) but Susan was buried in Deopham (next to Wicklewood) 25 August 1626, and John Canne widower married Mary Barnes widow of (or at?) Norwich 30 Nov. 1626. According to a batch transcription at familysearch.org 106, John Canne married Mary Barnes 10 Nov. 1628 in Deopham but this is clearly a coding error because there is no such entry in the Parish Register.
